One of the most important things you need to do with glass containers is sterilisation. Sterilising bottles and jars is critical when you need to preserve sauces, jam, or chutney for a long time. There are multiple ways to sterilise jars, including microwaving, boiling, and warming in the oven.
Each bottle or jar you are utilising to store food must undergo sterilisation. This is the case even if it is brand new. Anything with a tight lid preserves the contents effectively. This protects it from the bacteria existing outside the container. However, if you have not correctly sterilised the jar, you may be trapping harmful bacteria inside.
No spoiled food and a longer shelf life
Sterilising not only prevents the bacteria growth from spoiling your food. It prolongs the food shelf life too. Within properly sterilised jars, sauces, jams, and preservatives should last for as long as six months. This is if you store them in a cool, dry locale. However, you should always check the separate recipes for accurate shelf life details.
Bacteria can quickly lower the shelf life of your food. For those eating it, things could get dangerous. Thus, sterilisation is a vital step that is not wise for you to skip.
Before sterilising, ensure that you examine your bottles and jars thoroughly. You will want to watch out for damage to the lid, chips, and cracks. You should never expose any glass containers to excessive heat if there is a chip or crack. If you do, it could shatter when it cools.
It would be ideal for you to sterilise your containers for around 20 minutes before you need them. Make sure to do inside and outside of each of them.
